Hawks’ comeback falls just short against GTRA
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn rallied to score the final five runs of the game but came up just short of victory. Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire built an 8-2 lead but had to hang on to get the 8-7 baseball win May 22 at Ruthven in the season-opener for each team.
The Titans scored a run in the first inning and put a two-spot on the scoreboard in both the second and fourth innings. HMS cut the deficit to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the fifth but GTRA answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Hawks got a run in the sixth and then four in the seventh but it wasn’t quite enough.
Lawton Schiphoff went 3-for-3 from the plate with a double, two singles and an RBI. He also walked twice and scored a run. James Carlin was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Blake Meendering hit a pair of sacrifice flies to plate two runs.
Grant Kunzman had a hit and drove in a run. Hunter Daggett was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Riley Mattingly, Talan Zearing and Riley Wiersma each drew a pair of walks. Mattingly scored two runs while Zearing and Wiersman each scored one.
Caden Douma got the start and went 3-2/3 innings. He allowed five runs on two hits. Only two of the runs were earned. Douma struck out nine batters but walked five. Daggett went 2/3 of an inning and yielded three earned runs on three walks and a hit. Kunzman tossed 1-2/3 scoreless innings which included two hits and a hit batter. HMS committed four errors
