Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn came out on the short end of two high scoring games at the Sheldon Softball Invite held June 7 at Sheldon. Both of the Hawks’ opponents came from behind in the late innings as the host Orabs defeated them 12-11 and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley picked up a 12-10 win. The losses dropped HMS to 0-6 on the season.
In the first game the host Orabs scored five runs in their last at bat to slip past HMS. “Kamryn (Ebel) came back and pitched a great game,” said Hawk head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “The girls hit the ball decent but Sheldon battled till the end.”
The 11 HMS hits included three from Mahkenzie Mattingly. Eliza Tewes had two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Hawks with one hit apiece were Frankie Mohni, Gracie Knobloch, Addy Sheeler, Lindsey Van Es, Cammy Wilson and Ebel. The Hawks left five runners on base while Sheldon stranded four.
Ebel pitched the entire 5-2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and 11 earned runs. She struck out five batters, walked four and hit three. The team played error-free defense behind her.

In the second game Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley overcame a 10-4 deficit with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. HMS stranded nine runners, the Nighthawks five.
“Missed opportunities again,” commented Bronstad. “Lexi (Schmillen) pitched a great game and as a coach I should have left her on the mound. We had some communication errors on the field and tried to get a few younger girls in the game.”
Schmillen tossed 5-1/3 innings, yielding four runs (one earned) on four hits. She struck out three batters, walked two and hit one. Wilson pitched 2/3 of an inning, giving up eight earned runs on five hits with a strikeout, three walks and a hit batter. There were two Hawk errors
Knobloch notched a triple, a single and three RBI’s. Tewes was 3-for-5 with run scoring singles in the fourth and fifth innings. Mohni went 2-for-5. Addy Sheeler hit a two-run double in the first. Ebel singled and scored and Van Es had a bunt single.
