HMS shows better against Royals but still takes the loss
After being blanked by MMCRU on three hits in an earlier matchup, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn held a 3-1 lead over the Royals in their June 27 game at Hartley. In the end the Hawks would leave 12 runners on base in falling to the visitors 7-4. With the loss HMS dropped to 1-7 in War Eagle Conference play.
Lexi Schmillen got the pitching start and went the distance. She allowed six earned runs, walked four batters and struck out two. Each team totaled 10 hits. The Hawks had just one error.
“Lexi pitched a good game,” said HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “The girls hit better this time off them but we left too many on base. Overall it was a good game. We just came up short.”
The Hawks scored three times in the third to take their 3-1 lead. Eliza Tewes doubled and Gracie Knobloch received an intentional pass. Addy Sheeler singled home Tewes and Cammy Wilson’s base hit scored two. After the Royals moved in front 5-3 HMS drew within a run in the fifth. With two outs, Wilson notched her third single of the game. Schmillen followed with a base hit and an error put runners on second and third. Wilson came home on a wild pitch. MMCRU got a couple of insurance runs in the seventh with back-to-back homers from Gracie Schroeder and Chloe Alesch.
Wilson had the three hits and also drew a walk. Schmillen was 2-for-4. Collecting one hit apiece were Kamryn Ebel, Frankie Mohni, Lindsey Van Es, Tewes and Sheeler.
