Poor shooting, turnovers plague Hawks in loss to Boyden-Hull
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s girls had only eight baskets in their game with Boyden-Hull and toed the free throw line but twice. That is seldom a recipe for success and, indeed, HMS was on the short end of a 57-16 loss to the Comets January 28 at Hull. The visitors endured a scoreless second quarter and trailed 38-2 at halftime.
The Hawks’ eight hoops came on 36 attempts, resulting in 22 percent shooting. They were 1-of-12 from three-point range and 0-of-2 at the free throw line. The hosts from the Siouxland Conference made nearly half of their shots, going 22-of-45 from the field, including 1-of-6 from beyond the arc. That Boyden-Hull was just 12-of-27 from the foul line proved inconsequential to the outcome.
The HMS points came from Lydia Harders (six), Taya Mason and Olivia Grooters (four each) and Emily Mutombo (two). The 24 Hawk rebounds included seven from Harders and three apiece from Mason, Grooters, Jasmine Lux and Emily Otto. Harders made three steals as the Comets turned the ball over 20 times. The Hawks hurt their cause by committing 31 turnovers.
