Hawk bats emerge from their slumber to pummel West Bend-Mallard
Venturing outside the War Eagle Conference, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn clubbed three home runs among its 12 hits and got a five-hit pitching performance. All of that resulted in a 15-2 win over Twin Lakes Conference member West Bend-Mallard in five innings June 22 at Gilmore City.
Samuel Heyn got things off to a good start for the Hawks with a two-run homer to put the cap on an opening inning in which HMS tallied three times. A three-run dinger from Jacob Cates highlighted the Hawks’ four-run second inning. Then in the third inning Dawson Schiphoff blasted a grand slam as HMS put eight more runs on the board.
“The bats finally woke up and they came alive big time,” exclaimed Hawk head coach Jeremy Gloden. “It was a lot of fun to watch. The guys have been working hard and it was nice to see that work paying off.”
Heyn struck out nine in his five innings of work while issuing just one walk. One of the two Wolverine runs was earned. There were two HMS errors committed.
Schiphoff was 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and four driven in. Cates went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. In addition to the three-run homer he plated a run with a third-inning double. Heyn had the two-run tater and plated another run with a single in the second.
Keaton Graves enjoyed a 3-for-4 night. In the third inning he singled home a run and later scored. Three times Jordan Ortega was hit by a pitch. On two of those occasions he came around to score. He also tallied a run after reaching base on an error. Ben Haack singled and scored in the third inning as did Keith DeBoer. Also in the third, Trenton Vollink drew a walk and later scored.
