Hawk girls drop lid-lifter to Sioux Central
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn got the girls basketball season underway prior to the Thanksgiving break. Sioux Central outscored the Hawks by 13 points in the second quarter and went on to win the opener 50-34 November 23 at Sioux Rapids.
Double figure scorers for HMS were Lydia Harders with 11 points and Jasmine Lux with 10. Emily Otto and Kylee Schiphoff each scored four points with Elise Haack adding three points and Gracie Knobloch two. Lux and Otto each recorded an assist.
In the rebounding catergory, Haack, Lux and Harders each pulled down six caroms and Schiphoff grabbed four. HMS outrebounded the Rebels 26-24. Harders came away with three steals, Lux two and Schiphoff one.
Morgan Christian tallied 18 points for Sioux Central and Bradi Krager added another 15.
The Hawks were 15-of-39 from the field for 39 percent. They made just 1-of-6 three-point tries and were 3-of-5 at the free throw line. Sioux Central shot 42 percent with 17 baskets in 41 attempts. That included 5-of-17 from beyond the arc. The Rebels sank 11 of their 17 charity tosses.
Turnovers were nearly a wash with HMS turning the ball over 22 times and Sioux Central committing 21 miscues.
