Hawk girls score well in second half but lose to Sheldon

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn hit its scoring stride in the second half but it was too late to overcome a big lead by Sheldon. The Orabs eventually took home a 60-45 victory January 10 at Hartley. The loss dropped HMS to 3-7 on the season while the Orabs improved to 7-5.
Sheldon moved out to a 6-0 lead and a big second quarter had the Orabs in front 28-13 at halftime. The lead grew to 21 points in the third quarter. The Hawks tallied 32 points in the second half and trimmed the deficit to 12 late in the game.
Jasmine Lux poured in a season-high 18 points. Lydia Harders added eight points. Scoring five points apiece were Abby Douma and Kylee Schiphoff. Emily Mutombo added four points, Elise Haack three and Eliza Tewes two. Claire Johnson paced Sheldon with 24 points.
The visitors from the Siouxland Conference shot just under 50 percent from the floor with 25 buckets in 51 attempts. HMS was 17-of-53 for 32 percent. The Hawks made half of their six three-point tries and eight of 20 foul shots. Sheldon was 6-of-15 from downtown and 4-of-7 from the free throw line.
Douma led the HMS effort on the boards with seven rebounds. Lux and Schiphoff each collected five caroms while Haack grabbed four and Mutombo three. Lux stole the ball from the Orabs six times. Sheldon was charged with 19 turnovers, one fewer than the Hawks.
