Algona Community hosted Okoboji/HMS, Estherville Lincoln Central and Blue Earth, MN at a wrestling quad January 11 at Algona. Okoboji/HMS pocketed a 51-21 victory over ELC. The other two duals turned out to be losses as the Pioneers fell to Blue Earth 63-13 and to the host Bulldogs 67-12.
In the dual with ELC both Bryce Dodge at 160 pounds and Nick Bronstad at heavyweight recorded wins by fall. Dodge pinned Morgan Dalen in 1:30 while Bronstad finished off Jess Christensen in 1:52. Winning by forfeit were Jack Mastbergen at 138 and Ethan Wiersma at 195. Aaron Ortiz lost by fall to the Midgets’ 145-pounder Bringham Vermeys in 1:31.
Bronstad was the only HMS wrestler to record a win in the Blue Earth dual. That came by way of a 7-1 decision over Nick Lawrence. Dodge was pinned by Parker Meyers in 1:10. Wiersma lost by fall to Adam Schavey in 1:14 and Ortiz was the victim of a pin in 4:48, courtesy of Ethan Oppedal.
The dual with Algona saw Bronstad wrap up a 3-0 night by pinning the Bulldogs’ Cody Nielson in just 10 seconds. Dodge, wrestling at 152 pounds, suffered a 17-2 loss by technical fall at the hands of Brandon Harris. Ortiz was pinned by Luke Carter in 28 seconds and Wiersma lost by fall to Chase Roof in 2:41.
