HMS students perform well at State Speech Contest

Four students from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn competed Saturday at the Individual State Speech Contest held at Woodbury Central in Moville.
Both Jaela Anliker and Mitchell Meyers received Division 1 ratings from all three judges. Jaela’s category was Acting while Mitchell was rated for After Dinner Speaking.
Emma Schmillen’s Storytelling presentation earned a Division 1 rating from one of the judges and Division 2 ratings from the other two. The same was true for Anissa Bush in the category of Poetry. Emma and Anissa each received an overall Division 2 rating.
“Overall, I think that all of the students performed very well on Saturday,” remarked HMS speech coach Kyle Johnson. “I am very proud of the work that they did throughout the season and I think they should be proud of their own performances. The judges on Saturday did a very good job of ensuring that a 1 rating was earned so our students who did receive 1’s from any of the judges really earned it this weekend.”
The four students had competed at the Individual District Speech Contest February 26 at Sibley where they all earned Division 1 ratings. Mitchell had also taken an Improv entry to Districts and received a Division 2 rating.
