Outdoor competition became a reality for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls track and field team April 5 as the Hawks braved the wind and cold to take part in the Dutch Relays at Northwestern College in Orange City. HMS scored in six events to total 36 points and finish ninth. Host MOC-Floyd Valley won the team title with a 109 total.
Jasmine Lux placed second in the 400 meters and also anchored two relays to runner-up finishes. She joined Emily Mutombo, Emily Otto and Harders in the 4×200 and teamed with Mutombo, Abby Otto and Harders in the sprint medley. Mutombo finished third in the 100 meters and fifth in the long jump. Harders took fourth in the 200 meters.
Emily Otto was 7th in the 100 meters and Madison Otto placed eighth in both the 1500 meters and the 3000 meters. Finishing seventh was the 4×800 relay unit of Kamryn Ebel, Kya Christopherson, Kayla Kathman and Jocelyn Abonce.
