Still working at becoming the team they expect to be, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls track and field team took on some less familiar opponents at the John Larson Relays held April 28 at Armstrong. The Hawks managed to score 64 points. That put them fourth in the eight-team field. The girls winner was the host team, North Union, which totaled 135 points.
“A couple of our girls stepped up into new roles on our relays without hesitation,” noted HMS head coach Kirsten Taylor. “Our girls have each other’s backs and are willing to try new events. It’s been a couple of weeks since our girls team truly competed as a full roster, as we have run into constant conflicts with meet cancellations, spring music concerts, other extracurriculars, and the list goes on and on. I believe those missed track meets are what’s keeping our girls team hungry to compete at this point in the season. I am positive we are not the only team growing through these circumstances. We are really looking forward to running with a fresh and full team at the conference meet!”
Jasmine Lux captured both the 100 and 400 meter dashes. Emily Mutombo was second in the 100. Madison Otto finished 2nd in the 800 meters and 3rd in the 3000. Two more third place finishes were earned by the 4×200 relay of Abby Otto, Emily Otto, Frankie Mohni and Kylee Schiphoff and 4×400 of Schiphoff, Madison Otto, Emily Otto and Lux.
Megan Otto finished fourth in the high jump. Also coming in fourth were Abby Otto, Mutumbo, Schiphoff and Lux in the 4×100 relay. Abby Otto took fifth in the 200 meter dash.
