Late offensive flurry backs strong pitching as Gehlen tops Hawks
David Begnoche tossed a two-hit shutout as Gehlen Catholic thumped Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 15-0 June 3 at Hartley. The Jays’ junior hurler struck out eight and allowed no free passes in dropping HMS to 1-2 in the War Eagle Conference. It was a 3-0 game until Gehlen tallied 12 times in the fifth and final inning.
“Free bases and errors continue to haunt us,” noted Hawk head coach Jeremy Gloden. “I thought Nick (Bronstad) pitched pretty well in his first start. He kind of lost his command at the end, but he kept us in it going into the fifth. Their pitcher really commanded the strike zone and we were unable to get anything going offensively.”
Bronstad worked 4-1/3 innings, yielding 12 runs on four hits. Eight of the runs were earned. The senior starter hit seven batters and walked two. Tyson Tessum took the mound for the final 2/3 of an inning. He allowed three earned runs on one hit. There were also two walks and a hit batter. The Hawks were guilty of five errors.
Trailing 3-0 in the second HMS put two runners on base. Tanner Tesch reached on an error and Bronstad singled. The only other Hawk baserunner was Jonny Ortiz who singled in the third.
