HMS drops WEC opener to highly rated Jays
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn played its first official War Eagle Conference match of the season August 30 as the Hawks took to the road to challenge Gehlen Catholic at Le Mars. The Jays, ranked sixth in Class 1A, won in three sets but the Hawks got closer each successive set. The winning scores for Gehlen were 25-12, 25-18 and 25-22.
“I was extremely happy with the way our girls came out and played against Gehlen,” commented HMS head coach Cheryl Kroese. “Always enjoy an opportunity to go up against a ranked opponent and see how you play. The first match I felt we played better than the score indicated. Our passing as a whole was very good Tuesday which helped us be better able to run our offense. As the night went on our girls were able to do a fantastic job of keeping the ball in play and making Gehlen work for their points. I’m excited to take that level of play into our future contests.”
Directing the Hawk offense was Frankie Mohni with 11 set assists. Kylee Schiphoff led the team in kills with seven. Helping to keep that volleyball in play were Mohni, with 13 digs, and Elise Haack, with 10. Schiphoff notched a solo block and Abby Douma and Mohni teamed up for another. HMS served at a 90 percent success rate. Douma was 10-of-10 serving while Mohni was 9-of-9 and Abby Kunzman and Haack were each 8-of-8.
