Hawks perform well at HMS Cross Country Invite
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn hosted the annual HMS Cross Country Invite September 19. Runners from nine schools competed on the Sanborn Golf and Country Club race course.
“Our teams had a great showing at our home cross country meet,” said HMS cross country coach Kirsten Taylor. “We had two boys place in the top 20 individually – George Vargas finished 11th and Bryce Dodge came in 17th place. Our boys placed sixth overall as a team. Lexi Croatt led our girls team with a 17th-place finish. A couple of athletes were unable to compete, which is why our girls team didn’t put up a final team score. It was another positive meet with several athletes putting up either season or personal bests. This meet marks the halfway point in our season, as we are still ramping up in practices before we begin a taper phase in a couple of weeks. Excited to see where this second half of the season will take us!”
Aiden Bush placed 30th for the Hawks followed by Damian Dodge in 39th place and Blaine Finster in 41st. HMS scored 124 points. Sioux Central was the boys’ team champ with a score of 59.
Following Croatt to the finish line were Gracie Knobloch, who placed 24th, Juliana Pasillas, who finished 37th, and Clara Funk, who was 39th. Alta-Aurelia, which placed five runners in the top 11, easily won the girls title with a score of 26.
