Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and MMCRU went the distance October 11 at Marcus. The five-set War Eagle Conference match ultimately fell in favor of the Royals with their 15-9 victory in the final set.
In set one, HMS took the lead for good at 7-6. The Hawks could never completely pull away but took the set 25-18. The second set was tied at 9-9. MMCRU then went ahead to stay, although the margin remained small. In the end, the Royals tallied the final three points to win 25-17.
The Hawks overcame a deficit in set three to lead 19-15. Things got tighter and the score was 24-23 before Abby Kunzman put away a kill to give HMS the 25-23 victory. The Hawks moved out to an early 6-2 advantage in the fourth set but MMCRU rallied to take an 11-10 lead. Little separated the two teams the rest of the way. The Royals ran off four straight points to move ahead 23-19. HMS moved within a point at 24-23 but lost the set 25-23.
MMCRU came out strong in the fifth set to seize a 9-1 lead. The Hawks responded with six points in a row to close within two at 9-7. The Royals righted themselves and went on to win the deciding set 15-9.
Abby Douma gave the Hawks 12 kills with a kill efficiency of .387. Kunzman finished with seven kills, as did Elise Haack and Emily Mutombo. Kunzman’s kill efficiency was .583. Frankie Mohni assisted on 34 kills.
Haack dug up 24 MMCRU attacks and, in the process, reached the 500 dig mark for her career. Abigail Otto added another 23 digs. Kylee Schiphoff registered a solo block and assisted on seven other blocks. Kunzman had a 29-for-29 serving night which included four ace serves.
