Early deficit hampers Hawk girls in loss to Boyden-Hull
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn found itself in a sizable first half hole on the road against Boyden-Hull. The Hawks tried to climb out in the second half but were never able to make it to ground level in the 52-37 loss January 26 at Hull.
“We were able to get the first score on the scoreboard, but their press wore us down and caused some turnovers that led to them scoring,” noted HMS head coach Jenni Van Otterloo. “Being down 20 going into the half is a big gap to come back from. We played better the second half, even outscoring them in the fourth quarter, but unfortunately by then it’s too late. Kylee Schiphoff led us with 11 points and six rebounds. We need more than player to step up and score double digits each night if we want to win ball games.”
Moriah Otto scored seven points and pulled down three rebounds. Abby Douma and Frankie Mohni each tallied six points and Douma also collected three caroms. Emily Mutombo, Gracie Knobloch and Addison Sheeler each scored two points and Lindsey Van Ess one. Mutombo and Elise Haack grabbed four rebounds apiece and Knobloch snatched three.
The Hawks shot just 19 percent with nine field goals in 47 attempts. That included a 2-of-17 effort from beyond the arc. Boyden-Hull was 16-of-51 from the field for 31 percent. The hosts from the Siouxland Conference went 5-for-15 from three-point range and 15-for-20 from the charity stripe. HMS made 15 of its 27 free throws.
The 12 Hawk steals included four from Mutombo and three each from Schiphoff and Knobloch. The latter also blocked three shots and Douma recorded two rejections. The Comets turned the ball over 20 times compared to 15 times for HMS.
