St. Mary’s presses the advantage in win over HMS girls
A pressing defense helped Remsen St. Mary’s defeat Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 60-28 January 23 at Hartley. HMS committed 26 turnovers in the War Eagle Conference loss.
St. Mary’s shot 44 percent and HMS was close behind at 41 but the visiting Hawks got off 25 more shots and made 12 more baskets. The comparison shows HMS shooting 13-of-32 and St. Mary’s 25-of-57. The visitors had a pair of three-point baskets in 11 tries while the host Hawks attempted just three treys and made one. From the free throw line it was 1-of-6 for HMS and 8-of-14 for St. Mary’s.
Emily Mutombo led HMS with 11 points and Kylee Schiphoff added another seven. Scoring two points apiece were Elise Haack, Abby Douma, Gracie Knobloch, Addison Sheeler and Eliza Tewes. Mutombo and Frankie Mohni each recorded an assist.
St. Mary’s came down with 31 rebounds compared to 19 for HMS. Schiphoff collected five caroms, Douma four and Moriah Otto three. Schiphoff made three steals and Douma had two steals and a blocked shot. St. Mary’s turned the ball over 11 times.
