Hawk girls notch OT win over Trinity Christian
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn rallied from a first-half deficit to capture its first War Eagle Conference win of the season. The Hawks fell behind Trinity Christian 9-0 and trailed by 11 in the second quarter before storming back to force overtime and then securing a 44-40 victory February 3 at Hartley. HMS earned the initial win to go against the eight conference losses and improved to 2-17 on the season.
The Hawks had come back to make a game of it late in the third quarter. Trinity took a 33-29 lead with 2:26 left in regulation. Abby Douma then cut the deficit in half. With just over three seconds remaining Kylee Schiphoff hit the tying basket. When the Tigers’ half-court heave missed, the teams prepared for the extra four-minute session.
In that overtime period Moriah Otto scored two baskets and Douma and Schiphoff one each to give the Hawks a 41-37 lead with a minute remaining. Schiphoff then sank a pair of free throws and Otto one of two to secure the win.
Schiphoff finished with 14 points, Douma 10, Emily Mutombo nine, Otto eight and Lindsey Van Es three. Elise Haack and Schiphoff each had an assist.
HMS was 16-of-59 from the field for 27 percent. The Tigers made a third of their 42 shots. From three-point range the Hawks were 1-of-19 and Trinity 4-of-14. At the free throw line it was 11-of-24 for HMS and 8-of-13 for the visitors.
The rebounding battle went the way of the Hawks 38-33. Douma brought down 13 rebounds with Schiphoff grabbing eight, Otto seven and Mutombo six. Douma also blocked a pair of shots.
Mutombo came away with four steals while Haack and Schiphoff each registered two thefts. The Tigers were guilty of 23 turnovers. HMS turned the ball over 15 times.
