Noah Strantz captured first place at 160 pounds to help Okoboji/HMS finish fourth as a team at the Siouxland Conference Tourney held February 4 at Sioux Center. Strantz triumphed twice by fall to reach the 1st Place Match where he won a 7-5 decision over Zach Strubbe of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. The Pioneers’ total of 142 points left them trailing Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (180 points), Sioux Center (166) and Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (157.5).
Okoboji/HMS saw four wrestlers finish second. The runners-up were Dylan Jones at 120 pounds, Bryce Dodge at 152, Nathaniel Franklyn at 170 and Sam Pas at 220. Winning third place matches were Mike Gonnerman at 113 pounds and James Gellerman at 182.
Dodge, an HMS senior, began his day by pinning West Lyon’s James Bullerman in 42 seconds. It took just 63 seconds for Dodge to win his semifinal match by fall over Kooper Huss of MOC-FV. In the 1st Place Match, Sheldon/South O’Brien’s Coy De Boer notched his 36th win of the season with a 16-0 win by technical fall over Dodge in 3:53.
In his first match, Gellerman won an 11-3 major decision over MOC-Floyd Valley’s Beau Weber. Advancing to the semifinal round, the HMS sophomore also ran up against a Sheldon/South O’Brien wrestler with a sparkling record. Jarrett Roos improved to 37-0 by pinning Gellerman in :49. Undeterred, Gellerman responded by pinning Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Alex Bosma in 1:11 and then captured the 3rd Place Match with a 4-2 decision over Brendan Lamfers of Sioux Center.
A third HMS wrestler, Ethan Wiersma, placed sixth in the 195-pound weight class. The junior lost his opening match by fall to Sioux Center’s Jacques Zomermaand in 1:23. He was also pinned by Zach Brinkman of Sheldon-South O’Brien, that coming at the 4:26 mark. In the 5th Place Match, Wiersma dropped a 16-4 major decision to Bovden-Hull/Rock Valley’s Kevin Quijada.
