Yesterday’s Memories hosts local Pinewood Derby
The Sanborn Cornerstone URC boys and girls’ clubs hosted a Pinewood Derby on April 5 at Yesterday’s Memories and Truck Museum. A total of 59 boys and girls took part in the evening’s races.
The evening began just after 5:00 p.m. with a meal of hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks furnished by the Cornerstone young people’s group as a fundraiser for their yearly convention which will be held this year at Ashbury College in Kentucky in later July. Ice cream cones and popcorn was also provided as snacks.
The races began around 7:00 p.m. after the cars were weighed for their check in. The cars can only weigh up to six ounces total. The Pinewood cars were judged by speed based on four separate races per car and then the average speed was given to pick the top cars. Racers competed against cars from their age group: 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th. The cars were also judged for best of show per class group.
The races this year featured a new software program that made the event go much quicker and made for easier setting up of the race cars. The results of each race and next cars in line to race were featured on screens for the crowd to see, making the audience and racers much more involved and aware of the races of the evening. The race track was also filmed and projected to the large screen so everyone could see the race currently taking place live and not need to be looking at the track all the time up close.
The event had a total of around 350 fans, racers and food servers in attendance and made for a fun environment with the museum cars and trucks in the background of the evening. The race participants did not get too loud when they won or loss their races, and seemed to have an all-around good experience that night.
