Students recognized at HMS Middle School Awards Ceremony
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Middle School held its Awards Ceremony on the afternoon of May 25. Students, faculty and members of the students’ families assembled in the Middle School gym in Sanborn.
Students from grades 5-8 were called to the stage to receive awards from the different departments: Science, Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, Industrial Tech, Art, Family Consumer Science, Computer Science, Physical Eduacation, Music and Athletics.
WINGS is an emphasis at the Middle School and was chosen for its connection to Hawks. WINGS stands for Work together, Integrity, Never give up, Generous in spirit, Show respect. This year’s recipient of the WINGS Kindness Award was Madison Fritz.
The Mi’Ono Club annually presents awards to eighth graders. Club member Evelyn Kroese was present to talk briefly about Mi’Ono and to announce two award recipients, both of whom receive $50. The Perfect Attendance award went to Nathan Schreur and the Academic Achievement award was presented to Eli Mastbergen.
Following the awards, a musical selection was performed by the 7th and 8th Grade Choir.
The program featured an 8th Grade commitment ceremony. The 8th Grade students were invited, when their names were announced, to come to the stage and sign a banner as a way of committing to completing their high school education. According to the wording on the banner, the signees pledged to attend school regularly, achieve grades and credits necessary to graduate, be involved in high school activities and volunteer in the community.
Before the students were dismissed, they had the opportunity to salute one of their teachers, Tom Lidiak, on his retirement. Mr. Lidiak was completing his 34th year in teaching with 25 of those benefiting the students of HMS.
