Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn could close the gap against Remsen St. Mary’s but could never quite surpass the 10th ranked team in Class 1A. In the end it was St. Mary’s claiming the 3-0 victory by scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-23. With the loss September 21 at Remsen HMS dipped to 1-3 in the War Eagle Conference.
“I really felt like we did a lot of good things against a solid team,” remarked Cheryl Kroese, coach of the visiting Hawks. “Our passing was consistent, we were constantly getting a hand on the block. In that third set we’d pull within a couple points and RSM would pull away to five of six points, which is what good teams will do. So I challenged the girls with my last time out to get to that two to three points and then push thru it and they did. We had it tied up at 23-23 and just couldn’t finish. Very proud of these ladies and the effort they gave.”
Kylee Schiphoff and Addison Sheeler each notched a solo block and Schiphoff assisted on another. Moriah Otto, Abby Douma and Frankie Mohni each added one block assist. Eliza Tewes came up with 14 digs, one more than did Lindsey Van Es.
Schiphoff was 16-of-17 serving with three ace serves. Success on all serves was reached by Tewes (10-of-10), Kinsey Schirmer (6-of-6) and Douma (5-of-5).
Douma recorded eight kills, Schiphoff six and Otto four. Frankie Mohni assisted on 18 kills.
