Hawks are runners-up at Sioux Central Invite
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn bowlers took part in the Sioux Central Invite held December 5 at the Spencer Bowl. The other schools competing were MMCRU, Emmetsburg and Sioux Rapids. The HMS girls rolled a 2047 total and the boys a 2690. MMCRU won both competitions.
“Our girls team was much improved over the last two meets and we are very proud of them for the efforts they made,” said Hawk coach Julia Meyer. The majority of the singles games were above their average this year as well as the Baker games. It was a close match for first place as we were only 13 pins shy of being the winners. We are still looking for more sparing and consistency in the games as we know that will be the key to getting the win.”
Keyanna Brower was the top performer for the HMS girls. She bowled their high game of 167 and high series of 303. The other series scores were 293 for Meghan Larson, 278 for Heather Elgersma, 254 for Jordan Lux, 252 for Annika Overmire and 215 for Lillian Van Loon. The girls Baker game scores were 119, 135, 143, 128 and 142 for a total of 667. Meyer reminds that a Baker games is a single game bowled by five team players where a player bowls every fifth frame and bowls only two frames per game.
“The boys started out on track with their singles games scores,” noted Meyer. “Jack Mastbergen won the high game and high series medal with his 254 game and 457 series total. They improved on their spares and strikes also and as playing as a team. We’ve got to keep the momentum throughout the match and not run out of steam, but that will come. We are getting a better percentage of spares and strikes in the singles games as well as the Baker games. They bowled very well, and were only out of first by 85 pins. The winning team had to come from behind to win.”
The boys’ Baker games were 213, 197, 218, 158 and 147 to total 933. In the singles games Eli Mastbergen rolled a 333 series, Graham Lux a 330, Caleb Aaron a 323, Damian Dodge a 314 and Dawson Niichel a 305.
“Overall a very good meet performance for both boys and girls,” offered Meyer. “Thanks to the parents and fans for their support. We appreciate seeing friendly faces in the crowd and cheering.”
