HMS girls lose conference opener to Remsen St. Mary’s


Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn faced the challenge of going on the road to take on Remsen St. Mary’s, the fourth-ranked team in Class 1A. St. Mary’s never trailed on the way to a 70-31 War Eagle Conference victory December 8 at Remsen. It was the first conference game for HMS, which saw its season record dip to 2-3.
The visitors turned the ball over 36 times in the game. They did shoot 38 percent with 12 baskets in 32 attempts. They were 4-of-12 from long range and made half of their six free throws. The home Hawks managed 52 percent shooting, going 27-fof-52. They shot 19 times from both the charity stripe and from beyond the arc, making nine free throws and seven treys. St. Mary’s committed 13 turnovers.
HMS got nine points from Moriah Otto, seven from Gracie Knobloch, five from Frankie Mohni, four from Abby Douma and three apiece from Kylee Schiphoff and Lindsey Van Es. Knobloch and Schiphoff each notched two assists. The home team saw four players reach double figures in scoring.
Douma grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots. Otto pulled down four boards. Knobloch recorded three rebounds and two steals with Schiphoff adding two rebounds and two steals.
