Gehlen shoots its way past Hawk boys
Gehlen Catholic shot nearly 60 percent in posting a 74-34 victory over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn December 15 at Le Mars. Numerous chances in the lane allowed the Jays to make 30 of their 51 field goal attempts in the War Eagle Conference match-up.
HMS was 12-of-40 from the floor for 30 percent. The Hawks made eight of 22 three-point tries and two of eight free throws. Gehlen connected on half of its 12 trey attempts and was 8-of-9 at the line.
Jayden Leth led HMS in scoring with 12 points, followed by Lawton Schiphoff with eight, Josh Cruz with six, George Vargas and Kolby Douma each with three and Alex Billings with two. Cruz and Schiphoff each notched three assists.
Cruz collected four rebounds and Billings three. Coming away with two steals apiece were Vargas, Cruz and Schiphoff. The Jays committed 16 turnovers while HMS turned the ball over 21 times.
