Baserunning gaffe ends Hawk rally in loss to South O’Brien

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s seventh inning rally fell just short against South O’Brien. HMS had scored three runs in the inning to trail by only one and had the bases loaded. A successful pickoff play at second base allowed the Wolverines to escape with a 6-5 War Eagle Conference baseball win May 28 at Paullina.
The home team had opened up the scoring with a tally in the bottom of the first. The Hawks took the lead with two runs in the second but South O’Brien came back with four in the bottom of the inning. The Wolverines added one more run in the third to lead 6-2. There was no more scoring until the Hawk uprising in the seventh. HMS fell to 0-2 in conference play.
Jack Mastbergen took the mound in relief of Hunter Daggett in the third inning. The reliever allowed only one earned run on one hit. He struck out 10 Wolverines. Mastbergen issued no walks but did hit two batters. Daggett’s pitching line showed five runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Two of the runs were earned. The Hawks committed just one error.
At the plate Blake Meendering went 3-for-5 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Grant Kunzman was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Dominic Tripp provided an RBI single in his only at bat.
Mastbergen went 1-for-2 with a walk and a hit by pitch. Aiden Bush was 1-for-3 with a walk. Each scored a run as did Riley Wiersma. Brody Meendering hit a double and Ricky Smith and Daggett each notched a single as HMS totaled 11 hits.
