Generous Hawks see rally fall short against South O’Brien

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn saw a combination of errors, walks, a hit batter and just one hit allow South O’Brien to put five runs on the board in the second inning. That negated a five-hit, four-run seventh by HMS which brought the Hawks back into the game. Even that ended on a sour note as a soft liner to the Wolverine third baseman resulted in an unassisted double play to end a 7-4 loss for HMS May 28 at Paullina. The result sent the Hawks to 0-2 in War Eagle Conference play.
“Tensions and frustrations were high on the field last night that, in the end, effected our batting and fielding,” noted HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “Again, take away the one inning and we won the game.”
Through six innings the Hawks had just one hit, a fifth-inning single by Kamryn Ebel. Delaney Murphy led off the seventh with a single and Frankie Mohni backed that up with a double. At the top of the order, Ebel grounded out to the shortstop but Murphy came in to score. Kinsey Schirmer then singled home Mohni and Eliza Tewes followed with another base hit. Gracie Knobloch singled, driving in Schirmer. Natalie Daggett was next and her base hit plated Tewes. The comeback then was halted by the double play.
Knobloch, making just her second pitching start of the season, allowed the seven runs on four hits. Only two of the runs were earned. She struck out eight batters, walked four and hit one.
