Hawk boys welcome back golf with close loss to Hinton

For the first time in almost two years, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys were able to compete in a War Eagle Conference golf meet. The Hawks hosted Hinton April 6 at the Sanborn Golf and Country Club after the 2020 season was cancelled due to the pandemic. The sun was in and out but the rain stayed away and the temperatures were unseasonably warm for the first meet of the season.
Hinton edged the Hawk boys 196-199. “We got beat by three but battled really well after a tough start,” commented HMS head coach Mark Japenga. Senior Ben Haack took medalist honors after shooting a 45. Accounting for the balance of the 199 team score were senior Sam Heyn with a 49, junior Wyatt Borden with a 52 and sophomore Lucas Kroese with a 53.
Team scores: Hinton 196, HMS 199.
Medalist: Ben Haack (HMS) 45.
HMS varsity scores: Ben Haack 45, Sam Heyn 49, Wyatt Borden 52, Lucas Kroese 53, Keith DeBoer 59, Jackson Albert 60.
