Late tallies lift West Sioux over Hawks
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was clinging to a one-run lead over West Sioux late in the game as the teams faced off June 14 at Hawarden. The Falcons then scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come away with a 10-5 War Eagle Conference baseball victory. With the loss, the Hawks fell to 0-6 in the conference and 2-13 on the season.
The Hawks got off to a great start, scoring five runs in the opening inning. West Sioux responded with a run in the bottom of the first. The Falcons knotted the score with a four-run third before HMS went back in front with a run in the fourth.
Jack Mastbergen was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and an RBI. He also walked, was hit by a pitch and scored two runs. Ricky Smith had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Grant Kunzman recorded a hit and an RBI.
Brody Meendering notched a single, walked and was hit by a pitch. He scored a run. Aidan Espeland also had a hit. Jacob Cates scored a run and picked up a pair of RBI’s while Talan Zearing had one RBI. Dominic Tripp walked and scored.
Mastbergen pitched the first two innings, allowing five runs on just one hit. He struck out three batters but also hit three and walked one. Four of the runs were earned. Cates’ four innings included five earned runs on five hits. He recorded seven strikeouts and six walks and also hit a batter. The Hawks had five errors in thre game.
