Tough course results in high scores for Hawk girls at Gehlen
Willow Creek’s black course was not kind to the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls as they took on Gehlen Catholic. HMS struggled to a 212-263 War Eagle Conference loss May 4 at Le Mars.
“The Le Mars course proved to be our toughest challenge of the year,” stated Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. “We got in trouble too often with the water. Even though our scores weren’t the best, we know as a team that it’s a game of ups and downs. We talk regularly about mindset and understanding that we have to have a short memory when things don’t go as expected.”
The Jays claimed all the medal spots. Elise Haack had the low round for HMS with a 59.
Team scores: Gehlen Catholic 212, HMS 263.
Medalists: 1st, Jayden Barthole (Gehlen), 48; 2nd, Lynsey Rueter (Gehlen), 53; 3rd, McKenna Sitzmann (Gehlen), 55; 4th, Olivia Bunkers (Gehlen), 56.
HMS varsity scores: Elise Haack 59, Kinsey Schirmer 64, Emily Sindt 67, Elle Mastbergen 73, Megan Ten Kley 86, Darby Mastbergen 88.
