Hawk golf boys take sixth at WEC Tourney
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s boys finished right in the middle as the War Eagle Conference Tournament was held May 10 at the The Ridge Golf Club in Sioux Center. The Hawks were sixth in the 11-team field after compiling a congregate score of 380. The tournament champion was Harris-Lake Park with a 330 total.
Seniors Ben Haack and Samuel Heyn shot the low rounds for HMS over the 18-hole layout. Haack fired an 86 and Heyn carded a 92.
The nine-hole scores were used to determine the winner of a dual with Akron-Westfield that was cancelled because of the weather. The Hawks won the dual 179-180. Samuel Heyn was medalist with a 39. Ben Haack was part of a three-way tie for the next lowest score with a 44. The win over the Westerners gave HMS a final conference record of 4-6.
The points that golfers earned throughout the War Eagle Conference season were used to determine the all-conference selections. Golfers 1-10 earn first team honors. Included in that group was Haack, who was sixth, and Heyn, who finished ninth. The 11-20 golfers are the second-teamers. There were no Hawk golfers to earn that distinction.
