Hawk boys run and jump their way to Des Moines as seven events qualify

The sprinting boys from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, including one loooooong jumper, will be enjoying the rare air of the State Track and Field Meet this week. Noah Adams won the long jump and Connor Dodd the 100 meter dash at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet held May 13 at Lawton. That automatically secured for the pair a trip to the State Meet slated for May 20-22 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
However, it didn’t end there for the Hawks. Five other HMS events were among the next 14 best non-winning performances statewide from qualifying meets through eighth place. Dodd will also be competing in the 200 meter dash at state and helped Adams and fellow fleet-of-footers Ryan Borden and Dawson Schiphoff to qualify the 4×100 and 4×200 relays. Kooper Ebel is a 400 meter dash qualifier and is a member of the state-bound sprint medley team, along with Adams, Schiphoff and Borden.
Dodd finished second in the 200 meters as did Ebel in the 400 meters. The 4×100 and 4×200 both placed second at Lawton. The sprint medley relay was third.
The Hawks finished fourth as a team with 76 points. The top team score was turned in by Gehlen Catholic, which amassed 141 points.
Ethan Diehm placed third in the long jump. Brenton Thomas finished fourth in the 400 meter hurdles. Gabe Bronstad was seventh in the discus. Another seventh place-finish was turned in by the distance medley relay made up of Trenton Vollink, Bradley Zamudio, JP Mutombo and Bryce Dodge. In addition, Dodge finished 10th in the 1600 meter run. Coming in sixth was the 4×400 group of Borden, Travis Kamradt, Diehm and JP Mutombo.
