Hawks hit on all cylinders in win over GTRA
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn put a total of 20 runners on base in just five innings in a match up with Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire. The Hawks got half of those runners home but that was more than enough to come away with a 10-0 victory July 7 at Ruthven. The game with the Twin Lakes Conference opponent was played one day later than scheduled due to the weather.
HMS rapped out seven hits and drew an equal number of walks. Four Hawk batters were each hit by a pitch, and two reached by way of error. Meanwhile, Sam Heyn and Jordan Ortega combined for a three-hit shutout…well almost. Due to pitch count limitations, Dawson Schiphoff came on to pitch to one batter, inheriting a 2-2 count. He threw one pitch to get the called strikeout that ended the game.
“We continue to hit the ball well,” commented HMS head coach Jeremy Gloden. “Sam and Jordan looked very sharp in their final tune up for Districts. The defense continues to be very solid. All three phases of the game, pitching, defense, timely hitting are working together right now, and it is fun to see.”
Schiphoff’s lone hit of the game was a big one. His fourth-inning home run accounted for all three runs in the inning. He also scored a run in the third after drawing a walk. Ortega delivered RBI singles in both the second and third innings and scored the last of the Hawks’ three runs in the second. He was also hit by a pitch in the first inning and came around to score. Heyn notched a run scoring base hit in the second inning and picked up a second RBI in the three-run third when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Nick Bronstad stroked a double in the fourth and scored on the home run. He also had a walk and a run scored in the third. It was a walk that put Tyson Tessum on base ahead of Schiphoff’s blast. In addition, Tessum had singled and scored in the second. Jacob Cates added a base hit in the fifth inning. In both the second and third innings Keith DeBoer was hit by a pitch and eventually driven in by Heyn. Ben Haack picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the first.
Starter Heyn worked three innings on the mound. He fanned three Titan batters and allowed two hits. Ortega’s 1-2/3 innings included one strikeout and one hit. There was just one error committed behind the duo.
