Hits elude Hawks in regular season finale against Sibley-Ocheyedan

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s five-game winning streak was brought to a jarring halt. Two Sibley-Ocheyedan pitchers combined to no-hit the Hawks over six innings as the Generals pocketed a 10-0 victory June 8 at Sibley. HMS completes the regular season with a record of 10-11.
Carter Norgaard and Trevor Doeden each worked three innings on the mound for the hosts from the Siouxland Conference. The only baserunner allowed was Tyson Tessum who drew a walk in the sixth inning.
“It was a very frustrating night on offense,” remarked Hawk head coach Jeremy Gloden. “It was not the way we wanted to end the regular season, but we will regroup and get ready for the postseason.”
Jordan Ortega started for the Hawks but was removed in the first inning after his pitch count reached 14, with two hits allowed. Jacob Cates discarded the catcher’s gear and scaled the mound, with Dawson Schiphoff moving behind the plate. In his 4-1/3 innings Cates yielded seven runs (three earned) on three hits. There was just one Hawk error but eight passed balls. Cates struck out seven batters and walked three.
Schiphoff and Cates traded places with two out in the fifth. The final out of that inning came when Cates threw out a runner attempting to steal second. Schiphoff got an out in the sixth before allowing three straight hits and the run that ended the game. His line showed three earned runs on five hits and one walk.
