With a new Middle School building in Sanborn about to welcome students for the first time, we take a look back at several of the previous public school buildings in the community. These photos are from the album of Nellie Mayne Parker and are provided courtesy of Sanborn Preservation.
Block 36 In Sanborn Has Been Home To A Public School Since January 1882. Pictured Here Are The Frame Schoolhouse Erected In 1881 And The Presbyterian Church Constructed In 1884. In 1886 Two Houses Were Built In The Northwest And Northeast Corners Of The Block. Before The Brick Schoolhouse Was Built In 1896, The School Board Purchased The Northeast Lot. The Small House On It, Occupied By James Pirie, The Tailor, Was Moved To West 3rd Street And Is Gone Now. The House On The Northwest Corner Remained Until 1914 And Was Moved By J. Durgin, A RR Engineer. This May Have Been The House That Sat Where Iowa State Bank Is Today. It Was Likely Moved When The Addition To The Brick School Was Built.
Looking West From The Water Tower Which Was Then Located In The City Park, This Pre 1914 Photo Shows The Completed 1896 School Building, As Well As The Presbyterian Church.
The Brick And Stucco 1896 School And 1914 Addition Viewed From The Southeast Corner Looking Northwest.
This Photo Of The West Side Of The School Shows How The 1914 Addition Was Attached To The North Side Of Original Building.
This Is Beginning Of The 1939 School Building Going Up As Viewed From The Southeast Corner Looking West/northwest. The Construction Was Taking Place Right In Front Of The Old Building So School Could Continue Without Disruption. On The Far Left Is The Presbyterian Church With The Parsonage Built In 1917 Just To The North Of It.
The First Story Of The New School Is Almost Finished, As Viewed From The Southwest.
Taken On East Side Looking West, This Photo Shows The Northernmost Part Of The New School With The Old One In The Background.
This 1939 Photo Is Taken From Highest Portion Of The 1896 School Building Looking North. In The Background Is The Standard Oil Filling Station And What Is Now The Charlotte Dasen Home.
The Addition Is Gone, Leaving This View Of The North Side Of The Original Building And Part Of The New School.
Another Photo Taken From The North With More Of The Old School Building Torn Away.
