Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s cross country runners saw their only action last week on September 27 at the Alta-Aurelia Cross Country Invitational held at the Alta Golf & Country Club. The Hawk girls finished seventh among the eight teams with a 180 total. HMS was ninth out of the 11 boys teams competing with a total of 196.
Cherokee (42 total) edged Sibley-Ocheyedan (43) to win the girls team title. There was almost as tight a race on the boys side where Sioux Central won with a total of 82. Close behind were MMCRU with a total of 86 and West Monona with a 90.
Madison Otto just missed the top 10 with a 12th-place finish. Kamryn Ebel was next at 35th, followed by Gracie Knobloch at 45th, Ashleigh Vermeer at 49th and Juliana Pasillas at 50th.
Bryce Dodge finished 26th, best among the Hawk boys. George Vargas placed 32nd. Then came Aiden Bush in 43rd place, Aiden Jensen in 45th place, Damian Dodge in 64th place, Blaine Finster in 66th place and Gavin Faulkner in 72nd place. Running to a 10th-place finish in JV race was Ryan Grotluschen.
