Hawk girls convert turnovers into points to beat West Bend-Mallard

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn allowed over 50 percent shooting by West Bend-Mallard but turned the Wolverines over 25 times. That combination worked out in the Hawks’ favor as they notched a 66-55 victory over the visitors December 13 at Hartley.
Accounting for the 13 HMS steals were Jasmine Lux with four, Emily Mutombo and Lydia Harders with three apiece, Elise Haack with two and Emily Otto with one. The leading rebounders were Harders and Abby Douma, each with five. Collecting three caroms apiece were Haack, Lux, Otto and Kylie Schiphoff.
The 55 percent shooting by the guests from the Twin Lakes Conference was achieved by way of 23 buckets in 42 attempts. They drained half of their 12 shots from beyond the three-point arc and dropped in 3-of-6 charity tosses. The Hawks were 24-of-66 from the field for 36 percent. They were successful on four of their nine three-point tries. HMS went to the free throw line 30 times but was able to make good on only 14 of those attempts. The Hawks were guilty of 14 turnovers.
HMS was led in scoring by Harders with 22 points. Lux contributed 10 points, Douma nine, Haack eight, Schiphoff seven, Mutombo six and Otto four. Lux recorded two assists and Mutombo one.
