Five HMS boys track and field athletes to take six events to State
A core group of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn athletes have qualified a half-dozen events for this week’s State Track & Field Meet. The work was done at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet held May 13 at Lawton.
Ethan Diehm won the long jump at Lawton to earn the automatic bid to State. Hawks in other events had to trust their times were among the next fourteen best performances statewide from qualifying meet place winners. Having their faith justified were Connor Dodd in the 100 and 200 meters, Kooper Ebel in the 400 meters, Ryan Borden, Diehm, Ebel and Dodd in the 4×100 relay and Bradley Zamudio, Diehm, Borden and Ebel in the sprint medley relay.
At Lawton Dodd was second in the 100 and third in the 200. Ebel had a runner-up finish in the 400. The 4×100 placed second and the sprint medley third.
The State Track & Field Meet is being conducted May 19-21 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
HMS produced a number of other placewinners in at the Qualifying Meet. Aiden Espeland finished third in the 800 meters and Borden was fourth in the 100 meters. The 3200 meters saw George Vargas place sixth and Aiden Jensen seventh. In the discus it was Adam Schierholz taking sixth and Keevyn Jacobsma eighth. Zamudio was seventh in the 110’s and 8th in the 400’s.
In the relays Borden, Diehm, Ebel and Dodd combined to place fourth in the 4×200. Finishing seventh were the 4×400 relay with Espeland, Ryan Grotluschen, Brenton Thomas and Tyson Tessum and the distance medley relay of Tessum, Zamudio, Thomas and Bryce Dodge. The quartet of Grotluschen, Aiden Bush, Blaine Finster and Damian Dodge ran to an eighth-place finish in the 4×800.
The Hawks wound up fourth in the team standings with 81 points. Gehlen Catholic stood atop those standings after scoring 122 points.
