Hawk girls finish a season-ending sixth at Regional Tourney
Needing to finish as one of the top two teams to advance, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn instead placed sixth as Primghar Golf & Country Club hosted the Class 1A Regional Tournament on May 13. The Hawks recorded a team score of 450. Central Lyon was the top team, shooting a combined 386. Remsen St. Mary’s and Kingsley-Pierson each came in at 428. The fifth scorer couldn’t break the tie so it was the sixth scorer that allowed St. Mary’s to join Central Lyon at the Regional Final May 18 at Newell.
“We knew going into the Regionals that the Primghar course would be a challenge for us,” acknowledged HMS coach Cheryl Kroese. “We definitely could have shot better but as a whole I was proud of the girls. Gracie (Knobloch) was our low scorer for the day making nice improvements from round one to round two, shooting a 49 on the back nine.”
Trailing the 18-hole score of 109 shot by Knobloch were Kinsey Schirmer with a 114, Kaley Pearson and Elise Haack both at 115, Megan Ten Kley with a 117 and Emma Schmillen with a 123.”
Kroese took a look back at a golf season in which the weather seemed to come out on top. “Our season was slightly frustrating with the weather the way it was but as a team and individuals I saw great growth in the girls,” said the coach. “I am excited to have six players who will be returning next year and have high expectations for us. I think the girls enjoyed getting some team wins and I saw their competitive attitudes come out which was exciting!”
Ending their time competing as HMS golfers are seniors Ten Kley and Pearson. “I totally appreciated my two seniors,” remarked Kroese. “Megan and Kaley are super young ladies and worked very hard all season. They both play the game with heart and I will miss them being part of the team next year.”
