Hawk girls use Qualifying Meet stage to move six events on to State
The blue oval at Drake Stadium will again be feeling the pitter-patter of little Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn feet. Well, maybe more like thundering hooves. HMS will be taking six running events to the State Track & Field Meet which runs May 19-21 in Des Moines.
The Hawk participants earned their trip to the capital city by way of their performance at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet held May 13 at Lawton. A win there meant a ticket punched to Des Moines. That’s the way it worked for Jasmine Lux, who was victorious in the 400 meter dash, and for Madison Otto, who triumphed in the 3000 meter run.
Lux also anchored three first place relays. She teamed with Abby Otto, Emily Mutombo and Lydia Harders to capture the 4×100 and the sprint medley. Mutombo gave way to Anna VanderVeen in the winning 4×400. Although Mutombo finished third in the 100 meters, her time was among the next fourteen best statewide from qualifying meet place winners two through eight. That puts her in the race at State.
Also at the Qualifying Meet, Alexis Croatt was fourth in the 3000 and Mutombo fifth in the long jump. In the 1500 meters it was Croatt finishing seventh and Madison Otto eighth. The 800 saw Jocelyn Abonce place sixth and Kamryn Ebel eighth. Franki Mohni finished seventh in the 400 meter hurdles.
A pair of relays also placed. The 4×200 of Abby Otto, Kylee Schiphoff, VanderVeen and Harders was third. Finishing fourth was the distance medley of Emily Otto, Schiphoff, VanderVeen and Madison Otto.
Team-wise, HMS was fourth with 85 points. South O’Brien finished with the most points, 133.
