Season ends for HMS golfers at boys Sectional Tourney
The golf season came to an end for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys with the conclusion of the Class 1A Sectional Tournament held May 11 at Primghar Golf & Country Club. HMS finished sixth as a team with a score of 408. The top two teams advance to the District Tournament. Moving on were Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven Ayrshire with a 345 stroke total and George-Little Rock with a 367 total.
“Sectionals didn’t turn out the way we wanted, but we battled and stayed focused,” remarked Hawk coach Mark Japenga. “Unfortunately we didn’t play our best golf in the end. Overall, it was a tough season, the weather didn’t cooperate much and it made it difficult to be consistent. We are very appreciative of the Sanborn Golf and Country Club and how they worked with the golf teams and the school to provide a top notch opportunity for our kids. Hopefully we can improve for next year.”
Jack Mastbergen finished 15th with a round of 98 over the 18 holes. Spencer McCarter was 18th after shooting a 100. Nick Bronstad and Wyatt Borden each carded a 105 and placed 24th and 25th respectively. The 106 fired by Lucas Kroese earned him the 28th spot. Keith DeBoer shot a 112 and finished 35th. Shooting 81’s to advance to Districts were Braydan Perkins of Harris-Lake Park and Alec De Boer of Trinity Christian.
Closing out their HMS golf careers were seniors Bronstad, Borden and DeBoer. “I am very appreciative of our three seniors,” stated Japenga. “Nick, Wyatt, and Keith were a pleasure to work with and I wish things could have worked out better for us. But they worked hard and did a nice job of leading our team.”
