Hawk boys quartet competes in six events at State Track & Field
Four Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn athletes joined the competition in six events at last week’s State Track & Field Championships. The season finale was held May 19-21 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The Hawks were able to medal in one event in Class 1A as juniors Ryan Borden, Ethan Diehm and Kooper Ebel teamed with senior Connor Dodd to finish fifth in the 4×100 relay final on Saturday. The group had qualified for that final by placing sixth in Friday’s prelims.
On Thursday’ first day of competition Diehm finished 10th in the long jump. Later that day, Dodd placed 12th in the prelims of both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Also on Thursday, Ebel ran in the 400 meter dash but was disqualified for a lane line violation.
The sprint medley relay was the first of many finals held on Saturday. Borden, Diehm, Dodd and Ebel brought the Hawk entry home in 10th place.
With the 4×100’s fifth-place finish the Hawks scored four team points. That put them in a tie for 33rd. New London won the Class 1A team championship with 68 points. Earlham was second with 66 points and Lisbon third with 61.
The HMS boys track & field program is losing to graduation six seniors: Alan Abonce, Dodd, Jesse Garcia, Aiden Jensen, Brenton Thomas and Justyn Vasquez Alcantara.
