Gehlen scores unearned runs, Hawks none at all
Gehlen Catholic capitalized on four Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn errors to score five unearned runs. Those tallies helped the Jays down HMS 8-0 June 15 at Granville.
The Hawks would have loved to have scored a run of any kind. Gehlen pitching scattered the three HMS hits and issued only one walk. The Jays also played error-free defense.
The walk was drawn by Jacob Cates in the opening inning. Evan Eilers doubled with two outs in the second. Jonny Ortiz singled to lead off the fifth inning. Tanner Tesch opened the seventh with a base hit. All four were stranded. Gehlen left eight runners on base.
Starting pitcher Jordan Ortega went 5-1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and all eight runs. He walked four batters and struck out three. Trenton Vollink scaled the hill and walked a batter before getting the final two outs of the sixth inning.
