Hawk comeback falls short against Harris-Lake Park
For the second night in a row, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn fell behind early. This time it came back to bite them as Harris-Lake Park beat the Hawks 6-5 June 22 at Lake Park.
The Wolves tallied four times in the bottom of the first. HMS got two of the runs back in the second, but HLP tacked on a run in the third and another in the fourth. The three runs scored by the Hawks in the fifth left them one run short.
“We dug ourselves another early hole that we weren’t able to climb back out of,” lamented HMS head coach Jeremy Gloden. “I was happy with how we battled back from being down 4-0, but the early deficit was too much to overcome. I was also pleased with the top of our order and how we hit the ball. Credit to their pitcher. He had zero walks on the night. We had to earn every base runner we had, and that made things more difficult. Jacob (Cates) pitched well enough to win. Once he settled in, he was tough on the mound. Unfortunately, HLP is very good at taking advantage of walks, errors, and passed balls. They were able to manufacture runs on multiple occasions. A tough loss for sure.”
Cates’ pitching line for the six innings showed three hits and just one earned run. He struck out nine batters, walked three and hit two. The defense was guilty of three errors.
At the dish, Trenton Vollink was 3-for-4 with a run scored in the fifth. Cates went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the third and another in the fifth. He scored after the latter. Tanner Tesch was 1-for-3 with a two-run double in the fifth inning. Jordan Ortega hit an RBI single in the third and later scored. Jonny Ortiz had a single and reached base on a fielder’s choice, scoring each time. Evan Eilers had a base hit in the second but was stranded. The Hawks left five runners on base, Harris-Lake Park three.
