Hawk runners contend with wind, cooler temps at George-Little Rock Cross Country Invite
The weather dealt something new to runners from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and the other schools participating in the George-Little Rock Cross Country Invitational October 6. Blustery winds that knocked “feels like” temperatures into the 40s were a feature of the Otter Valley Country Club course near George and a first for the cross country season.
Coping well were Hawks George Vargas and Bryce Dodge, who came in 19th and 26th respectively. Blaine Finster was the next HMS runner to cross the finish line, placing 36th. He was followed by Ryan Grotluschen in 41st place and Damian Dodge in 42nd. The Hawks were fifth in the team scoring with a 140 total. Okoboji’s score of 45 was the winner.
Placing first among the Hawk girls was Lexi Croatt in 36th. Gracie Knobloch finished 40th, Kamryn Ebel 45th, Clara Funk 46th and Juliana Pasillas 47th. Sibley-Ocheyedan runners finished 1-2 in the race but the Generals lost the tie-breaker to Sioux Center and finished second, with both teams scoring 54 points. HMS was seventh with a 208 total.
