Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn traveled to Lake Park October 4 and returned home with a 3-0 War Eagle Conference victory over Harris-Lake Park. The set scores were 25-22, 25-22 and 25-11. The Hawks raised their conference record to 3-5.
“It was good to get the 3-0 win last night,” acknowledged HMS head coach Cheryl Kroese. “We knew coming in we needed to be aggressive offensively and not have unforced errors during the game. I would say in sets one and two we struggled more so with the unforced errors. We were able to correct that as the night went on, showing our strength in set three with 11 kills and three aces. I was very proud of these ladies and their efforts.”
The Hawks held the lead most of the way in set one and built the advantage to 19-11 at one point. Harris-Lake Park came back to tie the set at 22-all. Following a time out, HMS captured the next three points to win the set. Momentum was fleeting as the Wolves rushed out to a 5-0 lead in the second set. The Hawks worked their way back to an 8-8 tie and kept pushing until they led 21-14. Again, HLP would not give up, making the Hawks work to win the set by three points. HMS controlled the third set and there would be no HLP rally to prevent the sweep.
The 27 Hawk kills included 11 from Kylee Schiphoff, six from Elise Haack, four from Abby Douma and three from Eliza Tewes. Frankie Mohni assisted on 22 of the kills. The Hawks got 10 digs from Abby Kunzman, nine from Abigail Otto and eight apiece from Haack and Mohni. Douma made a solo block and teamed up with Haack for two more. Mohni’s 17-of-19 serving night included five aces. Morgan Grooters was a perfect 10-for-10 with an ace. Kunzman served 16-for-17 with a pair of aces and Emily Mutombo was 14-of-15 at the service line.
