Akron-Westfield tops Hawk girls
Akron-Westfield kept Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at bay in the fourth quarter and came away with a 51-41 War Eagle Conference victory January 7 at Hartley. With the loss in the Saturday matinee, HMS fell to 0-4 in the conference and 0-7 overall.
Scoring for the Hawks showed Abby Douma with 15 points, Kylee Schiphoff with 12, Moriah Otto with eight, Gracie Knobloch with four and Lindsey Van Es with two. Schiphoff, Otto and Van Es each had one assist. Makenzie Hughes went 11-of-16 at the free throw line and paced the Westerners with 24 points.
HMS was 12-of-43 from the field for 28 percent. They were 1-of-8 from three-point range and 16-of-25 from the line. The Westerners shot 24 percent with 13 makes in 54 tries. They hit five of their 25 trey attempts and 20 of 34 charity tosses.
The Hawks again got the better of the rebounding with 41 boards compared to 27 for Akron-Westfield. Douma grabbed 10 rebounds, while Emily Mutombo, Elise Haack and Schiphoff each collected six. Douma rejected two shots with Knobloch and Schiphoff each recording two blocks. Mutombo executed six steals and Mohni added three more. HMS was guilty of 30 turnovers and the Westerners had 20.
