Hawk boys outscore West Bend-Mallard
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn reached its highest point total of the season in a 74-54 victory over West Bend-Mallard January 12 at West Bend. The Hawks’ entire starting lineup scored in double figures as HMS ran its winning streak to five games.
“We were able to come away with a win against a scrappy West Bend-Mallard team,” commented HMS head coach Naet Hoaglund. “Keevyn (Jacobsma) and Trenton (Vollink) were able to get some early shots to go down for us that sparked us in the early going. I loved how aggressive Trenton was offensively which opened things up for others later in the game. I thought things flowed really nicely for us throughout the game offensively. We were able to get the ball where it needed to go when it needed to be there.”
The Hawks got 22 points from Lance Berends, 16 from Kooper Ebel and 11 each from Jacobsma, Vollink and Travis Kamradt. Lucas Kroese added two points and Tyson Tessum one. Ebel distributed the ball to the tune of 10 assists.
HMS shot a blazing hot 66 percent for the game with 31 buckets in 47 tries. The Hawks were an even 50 percent (7-of-14) even from behind the three-point line. They converted five of their 13 free throw attempts. The Wolverines were 21-of-66 from the floor for 32 percent. They drained six of 28 three-point tries and six of 10 charity tosses.
“I thought we didn’t give consistent effort on the defensive end in the first half and gave up too many easy baskets and offensive rebounds,” remarked Hoaglund. We were able to get some things corrected in time for the fourth quarter and were able to close out the final stretch on a much more positive note. We were better defensively and much improved on the defensive glass.”
Ebel grabbed 10 rebounds to complete a triple-double. Jacobsma and Berends also collected 10 boards apiece. Ebel’s defensive effort included three steals and a blocked shot. Berends notched two blocks.
