Johnson’s 25 points lead Sheldon past Hawk girls
After trailing at the end of the first quarter, Sheldon found some cracks in Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s game. The Orabs were able to go on to a 53-42 win over HMS January 9 at Sheldon.
“Our girls played a really solid and consistent game overall,” said Hawk head coach Jenni Van Otterloo. “We struggled to stop number 2, Claire Johnson from going to the free throw line where she scored 10 of her 25 points. Sheldon made a few too many shots on the fast break full court pass that we couldn’t stop, which made the difference in the game for us. We know what we are going to practice the next couple of days! Moriah Otto had a great game for us, leading us with 16 points and nine boards and being aggressive offensively. Overall, our team did much better handling the ball, cutting our turnovers down from 30 on Saturday to 11. I am pleased with those stats and like how more calm and consistent the girls were.”
Kylee Schiphoff contributed 10 points, four rebounds and three steals. Elise Haack scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds. Abby Douma had five points, six rebounds and two blocks. Emily Mutombo’s two points accompanied five boards, three steals and two assists. Frankie Mohni also scored two points.
HMS shot 23 percent for the game with 14 baskets in 61 attempts. The Hawks were 2-of-11 from long range and 12-of-19 at the free throw line. The host team from the Siouxland Conference made 17 of their 49 shots (35 percent), including 2-of-15 from beyond the arc. They connected on 17 of 21 charity tosses. Sheldon turned the ball over 10 times.
