Remsen St. Mary’s outlasts HMS boys
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn was able to hang with Remsen St. Mary’s, but the War Eagle Conference leader had what it took in the end. St. Mary’s eventually came away with the 60-50 conference win January 23 at Hartley.
“I thought we did a better job of containing the ball and limiting open shots,” commented HMS head coach Naet Hoaglund. “Offensively, I thought our spacing and ball movement was much better. St. Mary’s does a nice job of limiting driving angles and really makes you have to work through your offense to get good looks. I was happy with our patience offensively and the way we worked the ball around. This led to some open looks and we were able to capitalize. We hit nine threes which was able to help keep us in the game and within striking distance before they kind of put us away late in the fourth quarter. We were within two at 44-46 and then we got to 46 and just kind of got stuck there for a few too many possessions and St. Mary’s was able to close it out. All in all, I was pleased with how our guys competed and took a step forward.”
The 9-for-20 effort from deep was part of a 17-for-45 (38 percent) shooting effort for HMS. The visitors were 21-of-47 for 45 percent with four treys in 14 attempts. From the free throw line HMS was 7-of-14. St. Mary’s went 14-for-19 from the line, including 6-for-6 in the final two minutes.
Kooper Ebel led HMS with 20 points, followed by Lance Berends with 14, Travis Kamradt with six, Keevyn Jacobsma with four and Trenton Vollink and Lucas Kroese each with three. Vollink had four assists.
Berends pulled down 10 rebounds, Ebel eight and Jacobsma five. Berends blocked three shots and Ebel rejected one. The only two HMS steals were courtesy of Ebel. St. Mary’s turned the ball over just seven times while HMS committed 11 turnovers.
